Every day you have pollution on your skin and the effects of pollution on your skin are worse than you initially expect. Your skin is exposed to your surroundings, which can have a big effect on how your skin looks and feels. It is essential that you take care of your skin daily. If you are a bit late to the game then you may be thinking about what would be best to deal with any current issues.

If you live in the city, then alongside weather and UV rays, you are also looking at pollution from traffic, smokers and the general urban environment.

Pollutants can come in the form or dust, smoke, fumes and other particles you cannot see. Add this to the harmful effects of the suns rays and you are going to need to make some skincare, lifestyle changes and invest in some good sunscreens in order to protect your skin. 

In studies, women who lived in polluted cities, had higher levels of dehydration and signs of a compromised skin barriers than those who lived in a more rural surroundings.

Other effects of pollution include:

  • Sensitivity
  • Pigmentation
  • Enlarged pores 
  • Premature ageing

Protect Your Skin From The Inside Out

Staying well hydrated on a regular basis is one of the best things that you can do for your health and your skin. It works to hydrate your skin and flush away toxins. 

Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats is also beneficial to the overall health and vitality of your skin. 

Wear Sunscreen

Even if you live in a cold climate, the sun’s UV rays can have a profound ageing effect on your skin, as well as increase your risk of developing skin-cancer. Invest in skincare with a built in SPF or a separate product which is right for your skin type.

Your sunscreen will also provide some protection against air pollution and particles.

Start To Double Cleanse

Double cleansing has been popular in parts of Asia for decades but is really starting to catch on across the world. It’s a simple but effective method of cleaning and protecting your skin. First, use an oil based cleaners on dry skin, massaging it in to breakthrough makeup, dirt and sunscreen.

Rinse off and then follow up with a water based cleanser designed for your skin type. 

You’ll be removing all fo the dirt and makeup from your skin and preparing the skin to soak up your the ingredients in your serum and moisturiser.

Use A Face Mask

Face masks pack a bigger punch than your usual skincare and can replace lost moisture and brighten up your complexion and reverse damage.

If you’re new to face masks, they can sometimes cause your skin to break out, the dreaded maskne. This is not because they don’t work, but because it can take a while for your skin to get used to the ingredients.

To reduce the risk of breakouts and sensitivity, seek the advice of a skincare specialist and only introduce one product at a time.

Other than moving to the country, you’re going to have to find ways to protect your skin from the effects of pollution, as well as arming yourself with the right skincare and sunscreen in order to keep your skin looking and feeling great.
