This recent heat wave has me practising a more rigorous summer skincare routine. If you are embarking on your hot girl summer or taking time to capture your summer glow up then your summer skincare routine will need to be established.
Summer presents us with warmer days and longer nights, thus keeping us exposed to the sun for longer. There are so many reasons to love the summer period and the effects on your skin are one of them. The sun brings us those UVAs we like to tan our bodies with. Ultraviolet rays break down the collagen in our skin and one way to help with this is to take Maggie Q ActivedYou essential skin food. It is an anti-ageing collagen supplement which supports your skin from the inside.
The extra heat makes our bodies sweat more and opens the pores on our skin. My skin likes to break out more during the summer than in any other month because I am sweating more during the day.
I take a number of steps to make sure I am keeping on top of my summer skincare. I may still get the odd spot and manage to make its way through, but I like to take as many precautions as possible.
Summer Skincare Routine
1) Wear SPF In Summer
We should be wearing SPF every day on our faces throughout the year if we are concerned about premature ageing anyway. But in the summer months, this is even more important. Your face especially, as well as more of your skin is exposed to the sun for longer. The more time we spend in the sun the more damage there is likely to be to our skin.
The critical part of wearing SPF daily is removing it each evening. SPF is thicker than moisturisers and blocks our pores a lot quicker too. Blocked pores equal spots, predominantly white-headed spots. Or if they are left they can turn into more stubborn blackheads.

2) Lighter Makeup
If like me you are a daily make-up wearer, then you need to try and make a few swaps where possible.
The best swap I can advise would be to change your foundation for a CC cream or a tinted moisturiser. The fewer layers on your skin the better, this goes for primers too. If you don’t need that full-coverage look that day, don’t wear it. Let your skin breathe.
We can get stuck in a make-up routine rut, where we always do our look the same. Summer is a great time to experiment with your products and brands. You might find a lighter swap you absolutely love and your skin loves it too.
A more dewy natural look can be very pleasant during the summer months too. Try spending a day or two a week completely make-up-free.
3) Hydrate
Your skin needs to keep hydrated all year round, especially so in summer.
The average adult should be drinking 2 litres of water a day to promote healthy body functions. During these hotter months, you will find you want to consume more liquids. Water is the best option when it comes to hydrating and can leave your skin with a natural glow.
Drinks which contain caffeine will actually dehydrate your skin more so steer clear of those.
4) Cold Showers
During the summer having a cold shower will help cool you down as well as benefit your skin.
The cold water actually tightens and constricts our blood flow which gives our skin a healthier glow. A freezing cold shower is unnecessary but keeping the temperate on the cooler side will do you wonders.
The colder shower temperatures will also benefit your breathing making you take deeper breathes. The deeper breathing can help your concentration and productivity levels.
So starting your day with a cold shower is setting you up for a much better day.
5) Food
You could well be being drawn towards junk food for ease. Because who really wants to slave over a hot cooker when it’s already so hot outside?
We have delicious, fresh produce in abundance during the summer months. Change your eating habits to include fresh cooked vegetables in your meals. Add more fresh salad foods to your diet over the summer months to boost your nutrient intake.
Try some cold fruits for dessert rather than fried or baked cakes. Healthier for your body as well as providing vitamins and minerals our bodies crave more during the heat.
These 5 tips for helping your skin look radiant this summer could be everything you need to get your glow on.
Healthy skin naturally glows and working from the inside out can give you longer lasting positive benefits.
