After spending a long weekend here recently there are many places to visit and a few tips while travelling around Marrakesh.

I flew from the UK with EasyJet with my British passport and didn’t require a visa to enter the country. I was asked a number of questions about my occupation, the reason for visiting Marrakesh and where I was staying by passport control which seems standard in Morocco. This means getting out of the airport took a bit of time.

You will be hustled by the vendor’s outsider trying to get you to come into their shops.

Don’t miss the iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square. A vibrant hub of activity where snake charmers, storytellers, and artisans captivate audiences with their craft. Be very aware of pickpockets as the market is very busy but an absolute must see before you spend any money anywhere else on gifts, souvenirs or even products for yourself to take home. It is the cheapest place to buy products to take home.

Visit Majestic Palaces

Step back in time as you explore Marrakesh’s opulent palaces, each a testament to the city’s rich architectural heritage. The Bahia Palace, with its sprawling gardens and ornate interiors, offers a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of Morocco’s elite during the 19th century. Make sure you try the mint tea with the natural sugar too as this is especially delicious.

Tips For Travelling To Marrakesh

• Be prepared to haggle when shopping in the souks and markets, but remember to do so respectfully.
• Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen, especially during the hot summer months.
• Keep a close eye on your belongings in crowded areas to avoid pickpockets.
• Go to Jemaa el-Fnaa Square first to look and buy any souvenirs or products to take home, it’s the cheapest place.
• Learn a few basic phrases in Arabic or French to communicate with locals.
• Always have tissue or toilet paper with you as it is hard to find in many public toilets including the airport.
• You will see stray cats and dogs, so be prepared for that.
• The fares for the local taxis are fixed and printed on the windscreen, ask before you set off to your drop-off point.
• Take Moroccan Dirham as your payment method if you intend to haggle, cash is still king in Marrakesh.
• If you want to explore the desert a weekend isn’t long enough.
