Learn To Cook

Living off takeaways is not great for your health and it won’t do your finances much good either.

You may never have had to cook before moving away to uni, then you will need to learn before you go. Get someone to teach you your favourite meals or invest in a good cookbook. Often, cooking is easier than you may think it is. Don’t forget, practice does make perfect.

Book Your Student Accommodation Early

As soon as you have been accepted into a university, you’ll need to start thinking about where you will live.

Get in touch with your university and find out details of local accommodation. You could also search online for companies such as Axo Student that provide rentals across a number of different cities.

Set a Budget

When you receive your first student loan it can feel overwhelming to have so much money at once.

For many students, this is the first time they will have had so much money. It can be tempting to rush out and spend it all at once. But you need to make this money last for the entire term.

Set a budget and do your best to stick to it. Remember the important aspects such as rent and food and give yourself a weekly allocation for spending on socialising and buying anything else.

Join an Orientation Program

Orientation programs are useful for you when you are settling into your new university. Often, as well as finding your way around the uni and learning about the different resources on offer, you can meet new people many of whom may become friends for life.

Get a Head Start On Your Reading

Most courses will require you to do some reading as part of your studies, and often you’ll get your reading list ahead of the course starting. Take this opportunity to source copies of the books second hand. Then, start to read them. The more you can read ahead of your course, the easier you will find it when the course starts.

Use Social Media To Connect With Course Mates

These days you can meet your course mates online ahead of the start of your course. There may be a Facebook group set up for your course where you can start chatting to people ahead of the beginning of the course. Take advantage of this to make some new friends early. This will make walking into class on the first day a little less daunting.

Alternatively, you may find groups for the societies that you are interested in joining.
