As more of us are spending more time at home, it’s only natural we want to try and improve it. Renovations seem to be very popular at the moment and can leave us feeling rather understandably frustrated. While you should be practising self-care in order to help stress, renovating brings on a whole new level of stress and these top 4 ways how to destress while renovating will help.
Renovating a home is up there with one of the most stressful things you do in your life. Whether you are having a whole new kitchen fitted or getting a sunroom in your house, each step of the project is stressful.
How to Destress While Renovating

I have renovated every home I have owned. So that also means I live in it while the renovation is happening. So I have needed to learn how to reduce stress while renovating.
Each renovation I have done varies in length. My current house is being renovated a lot slower than the others. The main reason is as I intend to stay here for a long time. Most houses I live in for 2 years and then sell and buy another one to cash in on the tax-free profit.
So I get the renovation done completely within that 2-year period. Which order depends on the property itself but it is usually a stressful time.
I try and do as much of the work myself as I can. This was mainly the decorating side to begin with but now I have learnt a lot of the manual tasks too. I’m by no means a professional but I have learnt a lot along the way.
This hands-on approach naturally extends to understanding the legal processes involved in property ownership, especially when considering the implications of buying and selling. Engaging a conveyancing solicitor can really help clarify all the paperwork and ensure a smooth transaction. They can assist in navigating the complexities of property law, making sure all the necessary checks and searches are done correctly, which is vital for peace of mind.
Doing it this way means I spent a lot less money hiring people to do small jobs which I am perfectly capable of doing myself.
Re-wiring or moving mains pipe works is something that has to be left to the professionals.
Being able to wind down and destress is important and here are a few ways I find helps.
Home Goals
Remember the reason you are doing this. For me, I always buy properties that need renovation for the money aspect. It is all about the profit for me, that is a huge motivation.
When I think about how much money I am making by doing the renovation it helps me put things back into perspective. It is all worth it in the long term.
I can have days or weeks or months where I don’t do anything renovating. But I know that my time frame and when I want to reach my goal.
Cleaning In A Renovation
This might be something that to some people is the worst part of all however, I find it quite therapeutic.
Staying on top of the cleaning as you are renovating will help see the positives.
Clearing up the dust or mess as I go along on a day-by-day process really helps me destress. The cleaning up at the end of the job feels like another tick on the progress chart which I find satisfactory.
I then find I am worrying about the dirt being travelled through the rest of the house.
Having a clean bathroom and a clean kitchen is really important to me when living in a renovation.

We are currently undertaking our first renovation and although it can be hard to live with the mess sometimes as a room is completed it all becomes so worth it so far we’ve done the lounge and bathroom and at the moment we are on the new staircase and redecorating and I totally agree with you about doing the smaller tasks such as painting yourself. Happy renovating folks and enjoy the finished article x

I don’t mind renovations but if the kitchen’s being done – I HATE it!

You will most likely get stressed if you keep on thinking about what to do next and how much you will be spending on the renovation. As for me, I always think on the positive side thinking how perfect will things be when the renovation is done.
When you have good contractors to do the job you will feel less stress and problem and will have a successful home renovation.
