I have some garden improvement ideas to share as I am currently renovating mine so thought it would be a good time to share this. I do like my garden and generally being in my garden makes me happy, so having it as a usable space is really important to me.

During the Summer you might find me working outside with my laptop, sitting under my Pergola. Making the most of the sunshine and I absolutely love being able to do so. I like having a bright garden with as little tree cover as possible. There are other garden tasks which you can do yourself with ease and these garden improvement ideas are listed below. These types of renovations are best  done in the summer months when the days a warmer and lighter for longer.

Garden Improvement Ideas

Since I moved to my current house my garden has been completely overhauled as part of the renovation. It has been a pretty big task and I have sunk quite a bit of money into making it a great space.

Ideally, I want to add a garden room to my garden as it offers so many benefits. This versatile space can serve various purposes, such as a home office, a relaxation retreat, a gym, or even a guest room, providing a serene environment away from the main house.

It maximizes the use of the outdoor space, making the garden more functional and enjoyable throughout the year. The addition of a garden room can also increase the property’s appeal and market value, making it a worthwhile investment. However, right now funds don’t justify it, but certainly something I am looking into for the future.

My garden before the renovation

It was grassland with huge mature shrubbery and bulbs planted in sections. Un-even patches of grass and no path to get to the bottom of the garden.

There was a lot going on in certain areas. Cramming in multiple sheds alongside a greenhouse but then with vast amounts of plain grass serving no purpose. Everything felt messy and unorganised, plus aesthetically wasn’t pleasing at all. Not having any way to get to the bottom of the garden also doesn’t make the space practical. In those winter months, I don’t want to have to walk across muddy grass.

For me, this garden was completely impractical and I had to change it. Having pet dogs I had to also make sure the garden is dog friendly and there were no hazardous objects or poisonous plants.

I am still not totally happy with how it is, but I have some more improvements I am looking to make to help me love it more.

Add some garden lights

I have quite a large garden surrounded by other gardens, and away from any roads. There are absolutely no direct lights to be able to see in my garden during the evenings.

Having the new pathway to the bottom patio lit up would look great. I don’t mean like a runway with a stripe down each side in case you are thinking that. Some strategically placed lights alongside it. Spiked solar lights at intervals on either side, that’s more the idea.

Having a flood light or a security light projected from the back of the house down onto the garden would be ideal. This would make it possible to see the grass and also see where the dogs are when I let them out to do their business in the evenings. I also like how up lighters look on the side of a house, considering a couple of them along the side of the house where the side access gate is.

Add a Chimenea to your garden

This has been on my list for a rather long time. I feel like a chimenea would bring a nice focal point to the seating area. Something that I think looks lovely as well as practical for heating during the colder months.

I need to think about where it would be safe to put one as currently, the only patio I have is at the bottom of the garden. While this is where the main seating area is I would eventually like something up nearer to the back of the house.

There are such lovely chimeneas out there, I am sure I will soon have more ideas on which one I would love and where to place it.

 Garden furniture

The new patio area at the bottom of my garden has a large 6 seater wooden table and chairs, which is fine for there. It is a large patio and the table and chairs are very chunky and make great use of the space. I also have an area where I am looking to put a hammock to relax during the summer months. There are so many Hammocks of various sizes and styles which are free-standing so you can have them on any flat surface.

That is also where the gas BBQ and bar area is too, rather than up by the house. This is because the seating area is there so it makes sense from a social point.

But the top of the garden by the house still needs something nice to sit on. I feel some rattan style furniture would look great. I do like rattan furniture and I like how low-maintenance it is too.

Add some plants to  your garden

Right now the plants in my garden are sparse. There is an abundance of bulbs which are planted in the grass but nothing that really makes any style sense in my opinion.

I have these wooden planters you can see above at the bottom of my path which has small firs planted.

Along with other plastic planters strategically placed nearer the top of the garden which contains mini rose bushes.

I am looking to dig out one of the edges of the lawn and make a flower bed

The issue I have with this is that I’m not particularly green-fingered, and I might struggle to maintain them

Also, with having dogs and cats they would most likely attempt to dig some of it up and ruin it on a regular basis. With being a pet owner it is also important to ensure I have a pet-friendly garden

But I do feel adding more foliage might make a great improvement to my garden.

Keeping your garden maintained is another way to make your home enjoyable. A place where you want to spend your time and a way to boost your happiness while at home.
