Places To Visit In Southern Spain

In fact, it’s so richly packed that it almost seems unfair; whittling down your options could be the hardest part. Seville

Seville is the official capital of Andalusia and undoubtedly one of Spain’s premier attractions. Just a few years ago, Lonely Planet named it the number one city to visit anywhere in the world!

The Real Alcázar palace and gardens make for an enchanting escape from the ever-present sun, while the Plaza de España and La Giralda are impressive too. Cool off with some tapas in its narrow side streets then take in some live flamenco dancing to round off the night. 

Granada

Spilling out at the bottom of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is another almost upsettingly beautiful location. The jewel in its crown has to be the mighty Alhambra fortress. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a sprawling maze of halls, gardens and courtyards overlooking the city below. 

Walking down the Carrera del Darro and exploring the old Arabic quarter are similarly magical experiences.  

Ronda

The smaller town of Ronda is rightfully among the most visited destinations in the Andalusia region. It stands above a deep gorge in between two lush national parks, with a stunning bridge linking its two halves and providing spectacular views. 

Ronda also claims to be the birthplace of the Spanish bullfight, as well as boasting excellently preserved Arabic baths if you fancy a soak.  

Alicante

If it’s sun, sand and nightlife you’re after, Alicante is perhaps best known for its expansive beaches and bustling food and drink scene. But there’s also plenty for history buffs to discover here in one of Spain’s oldest inhabited cities.  

The airport is conveniently located too; Alicante transfers take only around 20 minutes to reach the city.

Malaga

Malaga is the birthplace of Picasso, a heritage reflected in its impressive roster of galleries and museums. It’s no problem if that’s not your thing though; the old town and stunningly renovated port are littered with classy restaurants and cocktail bars.

You’re not far from a diverse range of beaches either, while the glitzy Marbella isn’t far down the coast. These are only 5 of the well loved holiday places to visit in southern Spain, there are so many more.
