This information could be vital for cat owners, as these are ways how to remove cat urine smell from your home.

I am a cat owner and have multiple cats, and I can not stand the smell of cat urine.

None of my cats spray in the house as they all have been neutered and get along. I know this doesn’t mean that I won’t get cat urine smell in my house, but them all being neutered means they have less desire to spray at least.

Having a cat litter box indoors means that I can still smell it when one of them has used it. The wooden pellet litter thankfully absorbs the urine so it doesn’t smell as much as it would with alternative litter.

The main thing here is how to deal with removing the cat urine smell. As removing the smell will also stop future incidents in the same place. As unfortunately if the cat can still smell it, it is likely they will do it again in the same spot.

How To Remove Cat Urine Smell

Act Fast

Time is of the essence. The quicker you can soak up and dispose of the urine the better.

The longer the urine sits and concentrates the stronger the smell will get.

Do not use hot water. Use soapy water to clean the spot once you have soaked up the urine. Do not vigorously rub the area only dab it with the wet moppet sponge or clothe.

Multiple Cleans

Cleaning the area just the once will not be sufficient. Your first clean will have removed the majority of the urine which is great. However, once it has dried you will need to repeat clean the area a couple more times. Ensuring it is dried before each next clean

The surface area will depend on how many times you will need to clean it. A hard wooden floor is less likely to hold on to the smell like a carpet

Top tip is to never use hot water on any form of animal urine when cleaning

Natural Cat Urine Cleaners

Soapy water is the first cleaner to try but if that doesn’t work you could try using baking soda

Sprinkle some of the baking soda over the area to absorb any lingering smells and vacuum up the following morning. Where possible it is a great idea to stop the cat from going back on the targeted area until you have removed the baking soda. However, baking soda isn’t harmful to cats so you don’t need to worry about their health if they go near it

 Enzyme-neutralising Cleaner

There are plenty of cleaners designed to remove cat urine smells, and other animal urine too. Never use a bleach or an ammonia based cleaner as this may actually attract the cat back

Zoflora is commonly used in households and is a great enzyme-neutralising cleaner. You can find specific scents by Zoflora to cover pet smells

Always follow dilution instructions before using the cleaner and make sure the area is covered from the pets in the house

Air The Room

Opening windows and doors where at all possible is a great way for the smell to go

Often you will find the scent in the air immediately and circulating fresh air will reduce the initial smell

Room sprays and candles or incense are great to use after the area has been thoroughly cleaned. This will help make the smell in the area more pleasant

If it is just a one time accident then taking precautions in the future might not be necessary

However, if you have a territorial spraying cat you might want to try a hormone balancing plug-in like Feliway to try and change their behaviour.
