No home clean up is complete without going over the kitchen
Better not avoid this for too long, the grease can build up on appliances
Here are a few things to consider when cleaning your kitchen
Routine
Start at the top and work down
Now that is my number one top tip for cleaning the kitchen
Main reason for this is the work tops
While using the kitchen, you will find the work top harbours all the dropped food and bacteria from cooking
If you begin working with the floor and work your way up, chances are you will have to re-do the floor again
Cupboards
It can take some time but it is worth emptying your cupboards to clean them
The bits of dirt and dust can build up in there too
You put clean cups, plates and bowls in your cupboard, surely putting them into a clean cupboard is best
Use a disinfectant cleaner on the inner cupboard and the shelves, I like to use diluted Zoflora
Always make sure the shelves are dry before restocking as tins can leave ring marks if put on to a damp shelf
Appliances
The cooker can been the toughest item to clean, especially inside the oven
Your hob too will have a build up of grease
Gas hobs being more of a jigsaw puzzle to put back together after cleaning, but take them apart to clean properly
A simple way to clean your microwave is to put a bowl of water with lemon in there for a minute, and then wipe clean
Floors
Sweep the floor and then mop it
Lots of dirt and food debris can get stuck between the corners of the lower cabinets, so make sure you check twice before mopping
If you have a steam mop, the steam will help get into those harder to clean corners
Hope my way of tackling a kitchen clean is of help to you
Starting from the top and working down has always worked best for me
Let me know in the comments, is there any particular order you clean your kitchen?
Pin this for later
lovely kitchen. steam mops are great
That is a really good idea, thank you, I must try it next time.
Great tips – very timely as I’m planning on clearing a cupboard out today for storage of Christmas food – oh blimey, that time already haha!
I do every room from top to bottom, always finish with the floor 🙂
Without my kitchen routine, the entire house would fall into chaos!
Brilliant tips! These will come into use over the Christmas period.
A really useful article, plenty of useful tips and a great routine, thanks.
Some great tips here Thank you
I love putting bleach down the sink! I feel like a pro when I do this!
Great tips! You are so right start from the top and work your way down, Your Kitchen looks lovely.
Great tips and lovely kitchen x
Little and often really does make a difference and taking care whilst putting things away saves those messy. Cupboards
I quite agree with you – a steam mop is excellent and I use it on the cupboard doors, the fridge and dishwasher sides and doors too.
Any chance of a bedroom cleaning post? I have books, teddies, ornaments, bottles, – the lot! I need motivating haha! Great post.
Great Post. The kitchen actually generates the largest volume of dirt in the house. Without proper cleaning of the kitchen the whole house would become infested with bugs . A clean Kitchen also leads to a healthy family.
I also start at the top and work my way down. I clean the cooker hood, dismantle the rings on the stove top and put them in to soak, then clean the stove top itself. Then walls and countertops, followed by wiping the fridge, cabinets and shelves. Empty bins, spray with disinfectant and wipe outside and in. Lastly I clean the floor. I don’t like using a mop as I always feel they just kind of move dirt around rather than lifting it, so I do the floor the old fashioned way, on my knees with a bucket of diluted cleaning fluid and a scrubbing brush, and lots of floor cloths to pick up the loosened dirt and wipe the floor dry. It’s shocking how much dirt you lift up from a floor cleaned this way, even though we have a no-shoes policy in the house. Possibly to do with the fact that we have 4 cats who don’t wipe their paws when they come in from the garden!
Great tips thanks – the kitchen is the room I hate cleaning the most – oven – eek, microwave – eek!
Good advice, thank you.
Some great tips here, but I can’t clean my own oven, I’ve tried but I always end up with cleaner left on the inside of the oven and it scares me to use it lol, so I treat myself twice a year to a brilliant local lady who does oven cleaning x it’s well worth it
Thank you so much for these brilliant tips, they’re very useful xx
I love cleaning and always start with my kitchen – the same method of starting from the top. I also love Zoflora – the smells are lovely. However i didnt know about the water and lemon in the microwave I will use this one often thank you!
Top down! ACTUALLY like cleaning as long as I keep on top of it thanks for the advice
I hate cleaning but reading your tips has made it seem slightly easier to tackle
Great advice, i hate cleaning kitchen agh!
Ha Ha cleaning my work tops is my fave job lol i love having them gleaming and smelling fresh love zoflora x
Some handy tips there, thanks for sharing as my kitchen is ready for a good clean.
i hate doing the oven! its my most hated job! great tips though!
I use my steam mop to do the outside of the kitchen doors as well not forgetting to give the handles a good clean
We clean the kitchen every week. Never leave it any longer so nothing gets REALLY dirty and greasy!
I love cleaning the kitchen – there’s something so nice about having a gleaming kitchen smelling fresh of zoflora
I would love to own a steam mop. Maybe I should drop hints so I get one as a Mother’s day gift!
I am a Zoflora fan, too. Must try the lemon in the microwave tip. Thanks.
Cleaning the kitchen can be a rather laborious task, but I would like to try Zoflora products as I have heard lot of good stuff about them.
Some really useful tips
Great tips. I like to clean the cupboards first, then worktop and finish up by mopping the floor. Never tried Zoflora but must give it a go, as I’ve heard good things about it.
I hate cleaning the kitchen but I totally agree to start at the top and work down.
Brilliant tips thank you
It’s so helpful to have the process broken down like this, thank you. I find it very difficult to know where to start on housework, a lot of the time.
Agree with doing the floor last, a steam mop looks like a great tool to make light work of it too
Thank you for these tips. I agree, when it comes to cleaning the kitchen, starting from the top and working your way down is ideal.

Hello Claire, this is really nice blog. I would definitely apply these tips to my kitchen. I am looking for a new floor installation for my kitchen, I have purchased laminate flooring (From https://laminateflooringcolchester.co.uk/laminate-flooring) to install. Any reviews from your side, as which flooring option would be better for kitchen?
