The Benefits Of Eating Chocolate

We are a nation of chocolate lovers

It is pretty delicious, I am most definitely amongst the fans

I have some good news for all the other chocoholics out there, apparently its good for us

But wait there is a catch…

This is only chocolate with a high cocoa content, 70 per cent and higher

The Benefits

Improved mood

This sweet treat stimulates the production of endorphins such as serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical

It also contains phenylethylamine, which is renowned for its aphrodisiac-like qualities

Antioxidants

Cocoa and dark chocolate packed with naturally occurring compounds called flavanols

These are praised for their antioxidant properties and in turn work wonders for the body

They keep potentially harmful free radicals at bay to improving overall heart and eye health, and keeping your immune system in check

 Stress levels

Dark chocolate can lower stress levels thanks to a group of antioxidants called polyphenols

Polyphenols help to give fruit and vegetables their colour and fight disease within the body

Memory

Dark chocolate of 70% cocoa or higher could help to retain some of the key memory skills that people lose with age

It contains flavonals , which are phytonutrient compounds that are found naturally in apples, grapes, tea, cocoa and cherries

It promotes healthy blood vessel function, helping the brain ultimately

Skin

Flavanols work in similar ways to Vitamins C and E

It also encourages blood flow around the body

Ultimately to the skin, which improves hydration and elasticity

Heart

Dark chocolate is thought to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease

Apparently it lowers blood pressure, improve blood vessel function and can play a part in lowering cholesterol

Magnesium, protein, vitamin E, phosphorus and copper are all present in chocolate

Everything in moderation though

As amazing as all these benefits sound, of course it has its down sides

Those pesky ingredients like fat, sugar and saturated fats are all in dark chocolate too

Some of my favourite brands consist of Hotel Chocolat, Thorntons and Cadburys

Bit disappointed about it being only one type of chocolate and the fact that Galaxy isn’t included in there – but still. I’ll suffer – it’s all in the name of health!

I love 85% dark chocolate – you don’t need much of it to feel satisfied. It’s great it’s guilt free since it’s actually good for us.

I have a few squares of 85% Green & Black’s every day (what torture!). I adore dark chocolate and have even read that, in the USA, some doctors are recommending their patients have a little dark chocolate every day. If it’s good enough for them ….. x

That’s so interesting. On the whole, I prefer milk, but I do like a bit of dark chocolate from time to time, especially with orange.
